The Hunger Games

I have a new obsession! A teen series I can believe in.  One with a strong female lead and not one I want to punch in the face (Bella!). I give you... The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

This series is the latest craze in Belvedere.  As their librarian, I feel obliged to read whatever it is they're all talking about but I have to admit, I wasn't optimistic when I picked this one up. Harsh to say, but anything the girls are mad over tends to be crap. I know I am going to ruffle some feathers here but case in point is Twilight, starring the most pathetic heroine ever to grace the printed page.  Would The Hunger Games be any different?  Would it live up to the hype?

YES.  From the first page I was hooked. Yes, the first page.  That really doesn't happen often.  I couldn't put it down.  Seriously. That's even rarer.  I finished it within two days and promptly bought the other two books in the series, Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

A fantastic premise, well written, exciting, great characters, loads of action, a killer ending - I could go on.  For The Hunger Games is that rarest of things - a bestseller worthy of being such.  Now I can join the girls in praise of their current favourite and encourage those who haven't read it to do so.

I really can't wait to see the film at the cinema this week.
